Failed Photo Projects
Why Projects ?
Projects are very popular in photographic practice and can give a disciplined and intellectual framework to a particular concept. Unlike painting the sense of time invested in a single photograph is difficult to achieve, but a series of photographs can describe more fully an environment, an idea or situation. If the project is produced over several months or even years the sense of time becomes more apparent. However, the “project” can become a cliché and constrain ways of responding to the world.
Why Failed?
A project can fail for several reasons:
a) It’s a stupid idea in the first place (the main reason)
b) Another photographer has had the idea previously, you discover their work and can’t pretend you didn’t
c) The means to extend and develop the series has been curtailed for logistical reasons
d) Lack of motivation (links to a)
The photographs in this book show many failed projects and perhaps some will eventually become successful.
